Backstage Report On How WWE Is Using Gunther

Andrew Iverson ·

Gunther’s recent direction on SmackDown has reportedly caused some frustration and confusion within WWE.

According to WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select, members of the company’s creative team have questioned how Gunther has been used since moving to the blue brand. The concern reportedly centers on WWE’s failure to capitalize on the momentum he built through several high-profile retirement victories.

Over the past year, Gunther defeated Goldberg, John Cena and AJ Styles in their final matches. His victory over Styles came at the 2026 Royal Rumble, seemingly positioning the former World Heavyweight Champion for another prominent run. His momentum has since slowed. CM Punk recently pinned Gunther in a triple-threat Money in the Bank qualifying match, while Gunther’s current storyline began with Danhausen before expanding to include Finn Bálor.

John Cena has also acknowledged criticism of Gunther’s booking, although he said he was unaware of WWE’s long-term plans for the Austrian star.

The report does not claim that Gunther is personally unhappy with his creative direction. WWE also has not indicated that any major change to his presentation is imminent.
