  • Top 10 Greatest Mic Workers in Pro Wrestling History

Top 10 Greatest Mic Workers in Pro Wrestling History

A finishing move can end a match. A great promo can end a career — or launch one into the stratosphere. These 10 wrestlers understood something most never fully grasp: in professional wrestling, the microphone is the most dangerous weapon in the building.

    10. MJF

    AEW • 2019–PRESENT

Maxwell Jacob Friedman is the best heel talker of his generation and the strongest argument that elite mic work is not a relic of a previous era. MJF is clearly a student of the game. His promos are technically constructed with the precision of a trained writer — knowing exactly when to go personal, when to break kayfabe and when to let the crowd’s hatred fuel the next sentence. Just recent turning 30, MJF has already produced promo work that belongs in the same conversation as the legends above him on this list. You can see bits and pieces from the rest of the field in his work

    9. Steve Austin

    WCW / WWE • 1989–2003

Stone Cold Steve Austin’s mic work was deceptively simple — short sentences, blue collar attitude and a consistent philosophical code about beer, stubbornness and not taking orders. That simplicity was pure genius, because every word Austin said felt like something a real person in the audience would actually think or want to say themselves. His promos didn’t just over deliver on crowd reaction; they created a cultural identity that resonated far beyond wrestling fans. Add in the raspy Texas accent and 99% of the time you could feel his words.

    8. John Cena

    WWE • 2000–2025

John Cena’s mic work is one of the most underrated in wrestling history, largely because his babyface run drew so much heat that fans overlooked how technically accomplished he was at promos. His rap-influenced early character gave him a comedic edge and quick wittedness that few main event stars of his era could match. When Cena went serious — particularly in feuds with CM Punk and The Rock — he consistently delivered the kind of composed, layered promo work that belongs in any legitimate conversation about the best talkers of his generation.

    7. Paul Heyman

    ECW / WCW / WWE • 1987–PRESENT

Paul Heyman is the closest thing to a pure orator professional wrestling has ever produced — a man who could take the most absurd premise and present it with the conviction of a closing argument before a jury. As both a performer and an advocate for Brock Lesnar, he demonstrated that great mic work is fundamentally about persuasion, not volume. His promos don’t just sell matches; they reframe the entire narrative around his client as inevitable and undeniable.

    6.  Roddy Piper

    NWA / WCW / WWE • 1975–2011

Roddy Piper was the original unpredictable — a man who could shift from hilarious to genuinely unnerving in a single sentence, and frequently did. His Piper’s Pit segments set the template for the wrestling talk show format precisely because he could not be scripted into a corner; he found the live wire in every exchange and grabbed it with both hands. Piper’s gift was making everyone around him seem like they were improvising just to keep up.

    5. Jake “The Snake” Roberts

    WWE / WCW / INDIES • 1974–2018

Where most wrestlers screamed to get their point across, Jake Roberts whispered — and arenas went dead silent. His mic work was psychological rather than theatrical, built on menace, metaphor and the unsettling calm of a man who had already decided what he was going to do to you. Roberts proved that restraint could be more terrifying than anything a louder wrestler could offer.

    4. The Rock

    WWE • 1996–PRESENT

The Rock turned catchphrases into cultural currency and crowd work into an art form, operating on a comedic timing and rhythm that most stand-up comedians would envy. His genius was making the audience feel like participants rather than spectators — his call-and-response style gave arenas of 20,000 people the illusion they were having a private conversation with him. No wrestler before or since has crossed over into mainstream entertainment on the strength of mic work alone quite like Dwayne Johnson did.

    3.  CM Punk

    ROH / WWE / AEW • 2002–PRESENT

CM Punk’s 2011 “pipe bomb” promo remains the most electrifying unscripted moment in modern wrestling, but it was no accident — it was the product of a career built on sharp, specific and brutally honest mic work. Punk spoke with the controlled rage of someone who actually meant every single word, which made him uniquely credible in an era of polished corporate promos. Even his detractors concede that when the microphone was in his hand, you could not change the channel.

    2.  Dusty Rhodes

    NWA / WCW / WWE • 1974–2010

The American Dream spoke directly to working-class audiences in a way no other wrestler in history has managed to replicate. His promos were loose, rambling and deeply emotional — yet somehow always landed exactly where they needed to. Dusty turned vulnerability into a superpower, and crowds didn’t just cheer for him; they believed him.

    1.  Ric Flair

    NWA / WCW / WWE • 1972–2011

No one in wrestling history combined volume, charisma and pure spectacle the way Ric Flair did every time he grabbed a microphone. His promos were operatic performances — part carnival barker, part Shakespearean villain — delivered with a conviction that made every word feel like gospel. Whether he was bragging about limousine rides and jet plane flights or begging for mercy on his knees, Flair was incapable of giving a dull moment. I’m sure if you asked all men ranked behind him, they would agree he would be #1.

  • The Top 10 Matches in AEW History, Ranked

The Top 10 Matches in AEW History, Ranked

Sometimes I forget how young AEW still is. It has not been around that long, yet it already has a backlog of matches that feel historic. These are the kinds of matches you rewatch on a random weeknight on HBO Max or send to a friend with a simple message: you have to see this.

Once Forbidden Door became an annual event, the number of dream matches only grew. This is not a technical breakdown or star-rating list. This is a fan list. Some matches are left off, and that’s okay, they are still great. These are the matches people still talk about, rewatch, post clips of and hold onto years later.

    Let’s count it down.

    10. Swerve Strickland (c) vs. Will Ospreay,
    Forbidden Door 2024

This one can get overlooked because Forbidden Door cards are always loaded, but it delivers. Two elite athletes move at full speed with no hesitation. Once Ospreay arrived in AEW, this matchup felt inevitable, and it delivered.

Each sequence builds on the last, faster and more intense. By the end, it feels unreal. It also felt like a preview of AEW’s main event scene for the next decade.

    9. MJF vs. CM Punk
    Dog Collar Match, Revolution 2022

Pure hatred defined this match. Chains, blood and old-school callbacks made it feel deeply personal. Not storyline personal. Real personal.

This was also the night MJF cemented himself as a top star. After this, there was no denying it.

    8. Mariah May vs. Toni Storm (c)
Hollywood Ending Falls Count Anywhere, Revolution 2025

This match still feels surreal. It blended cinematic storytelling with chaos. The action moved through the arena and into complete disorder, yet it never felt over the top. It felt dramatic, emotional and intense.

Storm fully embraced her Hollywood persona, while May matched her at every level. It felt bigger than a title match. It felt like the climax of a film.

It also served as a fitting sendoff for May and capped what may be the best feud in AEW history. This stands as the top women’s match in company history and proof the division can headline.

    7. Kenny Omega (c) vs. Bryan Danielson,
    Grand Slam 2021

A dream match that lived up to expectations. The atmosphere in New York felt massive as two of the best faced off. Danielson was fresh from leaving WWE, and the dream matches could finally come to life.

Thirty minutes of wrestling with no wasted motion. Even the draw felt right. It felt epic, like two gods testing each other.

    6. Bryan Danielson vs. MJF (c)
60-Minute Iron Man Match, Revolution 2023

MJF proved himself again here. Going an hour with Danielson is a test few can pass. He did.

The pacing, storytelling and final stretch kept the crowd engaged throughout. It had a classic, old-school feel that worked perfectly.

    5. Young Bucks (c) vs. Lucha Bros
Steel Cage Match, All Out 2021

One of the wildest tag matches ever. Blood, near falls and unforgettable moments defined it.

By the end, no one was sitting. I was there live and by the end I had no voice. This is the match to show anyone that doubts tag team wrestling can deliver the best matches.

    4. Hangman Page vs. Swerve Strickland Texas Death Match, Full Gear 2023

This match was violent and relentless. It was not about technique. It was about damage.

Barbed wire, glass, staples and more turned it into a brutal spectacle. It also solidified Strickland as a true main event star. This match helped solidify this feud as one of the best ever.

    3. Bryan Danielson vs. Will Ospreay,
    Dynasty 2024

A showcase of elite wrestling. Counters, strikes and constant motion made it impossible to look away.

Danielson’s technical style blended with Ospreay’s speed and creativity. Every near fall felt significant. It is the kind of match that reminds you what peak in ring storytelling looks like when two of the best push each other to the limit.

    2. Hangman Page and Kenny Omega (c) vs. Young Bucks,
    Revolution 2020

For a long time, this stood at the top. It remains AEW’s best tag team match ever.

The storytelling carried everything. Friendship, tension and rivalry played out in every move. It was not just a match. It was a story that touched every emotion.

    1. Will Ospreay vs. Kenny Omega (c),
    Forbidden Door 2023

    This is the one.

From start to finish, it delivered at the highest level. Ospreay entered as the outsider, while Omega defended both his championship and his ground.

The match featured constant momentum swings, creative offense and near falls that kept the crowd engaged throughout. Ospreay’s speed matched Omega’s precision, creating a near perfect balance.

It felt like two of the best in the world pushing each other to the limit. Every sequence raised the stakes.

When it ended, it left a lasting impression. The kind of match that defines a company. The kind you recommend every time. Only time will tell if we get a third match.

    Maybe All In 2026?

  • The Wrestlemania Rundown: The Cody Edition

The Wrestlemania Rundown: The Cody Edition

Wrestlemania 42 is officially in the books and.. boy did it fly by! It came and it went. What a weekend. Welcome to the Wrestlemania Rundown: The Cody Edition. Where I give my thoughts and opinions and you either agree or disagree. Let’s get into it!

I want to get this out of the way. In my humble opinion, night 2 saved the weekend. Night 2 had the star power, the matches, and the build for these matches were better than half of the matches on night 1.

So let’s start from the top. John Cena comes out and welcomes everyone back for night 2 of Wrestlemania after a historic and incredible night 1. Now I don’t know what show Cena watched. But I don’t think we watched the same one. He hyped up Oba VS Lesnar and then walked away.

First up, was the match I have been looking forward to since it was announced, Oba VS Lesnar. Now I’ve seen a lot of people say that the match was way too short. Here’s the thing. For me it lived up to the expectations. This match was made to make Oba Femi look strong and it did just that. It gave Oba his mania moment. It was chaos, it was fun, and the people love Femi. The talk of the night was the ending. When the match was over, Lesnar stayed back and took his gloves and boots off and laid them in the ring. Heyman and Lesnar were very emotional to close it as he left the ring. So is he retired? I don’t think so. But we shall see. Rating: 8/10

Next up, the 6 man ladder match for the Intercontinental Championship. The attires? On point. The match? Incredible, this match was everything I expected it to be and more. It had the athleticism, the crowd was in it, it had the spots, and the moments. It was a true Wrestlemania style ladder match. I truly didn’t expect Penta to win but to my surprise he did and I was very okay with it. Rating: 9.5/10

Up next, Trick Williams VS Sami Zayn for the United States Championship. This match was good. I wish I had more and Trick got showcased more than he did, this match seemed to of flew by. Trick is over and Vegas HATED Sami. Trick winning the title was the right call. WWE needs to continue pushing him to the moon. Rating: 7/10

Next was the return of the alter ego. The Demon. Dirty Dom Mysterio VS Finn Balor. Before I go into the match I just wanna say. These entrances were fantastic. The king of the luchadores entrance was great and the return of the demon was excellent. I said out loud during Finn’s entrance “he actually looks happy and looks like he’s having fun”. The match itself lived up to the story. It had everything. The addition of the street fight stipulation was a welcomed one and I feel like added a little more excitement. However I wish I had more. More outside of the ring moments and maybe even some in the crowd moments. But this match was great. I would say this was probably my 3rd favorite match of the night. 8.5/10

Next was the Woman’s Championship match. First things first. I hated that Rhea came out last with no special entrance. I get that they may of done that for a reason but I just didn’t enjoy it. This match was pretty good. Another match I think we needed more of. The addition of IYO got a huge pop and I was very happy with that. Rhea winning was okay. We knew it would happen. I was hoping for a swerve and they kept building Jade up and getting her better but I guess not. Let’s see what’s next for her. Rating: 7/10

The Danhausen segment was incredible. I loved everything about it and I love that they are going all in on Danhausen. He is incredible and very good for WWE.

The main event. The match to end the weekend. Incredible, outstanding. I have so many words I could use but you would be reading this for a while. This match was everything. We knew that Roman would most likely be winning this one and at the end of the night. He ultimately did. I’m interested to see what they do with Punk now. How often is Roman going to show up? Is this ultimately leading to Riyadh for the rumored Rock VS Roman match? I guess we will wait and see. Rating: 9/10

That’s it! Mania is over and in the books. The build now begins for the next one. Obviously we still have the Raw after Mania which is normally a very big show as well as the Smackdown after Mania. What’s in store? Who knows! It’s post Wrestlemania season.. anything can happen! But for now I give Wrestlemania 42 an overall rating of 7/10.

Thank you for joining me on the Wrestlemania Rundown: The Cody Edition. Maybe this will become a thing for all PLE’s. Who knows! But until then remember to subscribe to Bodyslam.net and follow us for all things wrestling.

  • Night 2 Entrances Longer Than Several Matches Across WrestleMania

Night 2 Entrances Longer Than Several Matches Across WrestleMania

WrestleMania has faced growing criticism from fans due to the heavy presence of commercials and the overall match length across both Night 1 and Night 2.

The conversation intensified during the Night 2 main event, where the entrances for Roman Reigns and CM Punk lasted a combined 12 minutes and 26 seconds. Reigns’ entrance clocked in at 6:29, while Punk’s entrance lasted 5 minutes and 57 seconds.

Notably, a commercial break lasting nearly 8 minutes aired right before the main event, further adding to fan frustration regarding the show’s pacing.

When compared to match times across both nights, the entrances alone were longer than several bouts on the card:

    • Women’s Fatal 4-Way Tag Team Match: 8 minutes
    • Becky Lynch vs. AJ Lee: 8 minutes
    • Liv Morgan vs. Stephanie Vaquer: 7 minutes
    • The Usos & LA Knight vs. Vision/Speed: 7 minutes
    • United States Title Match: 7 minutes and 6 seconds
    • Rhea Ripley vs. Jade Cargill: 10 minutes and 9 seconds
    • Finn Bálor vs. Dominik Mysterio (Street Fight): 10 minutes and 25 seconds
    • Oba Femi vs. Brock Lesnar: 4 minutes and 48 seconds

The issue, however, is not necessarily presentation over substance, but rather the amount of time allocated to advertising. Many fans pointed out that commercials and non-wrestling segments significantly impacted how much in-ring action each match received.

With WrestleMania being WWE’s biggest annual event, the balance between commercial commitments and match quality has become a major point of discussion coming out of the weekend.

  • WrestleMania: Roman Reigns Wins WWE World Heavyweight Championship

WrestleMania: Roman Reigns Wins WWE World Heavyweight Championship

The main event of WrestleMania 42 Night Two, and the final match of the entire weekend. CM Punk defends the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Roman Reigns. Big fight feel.

    https://x.com/bodyslamnet/status/2046034479563600094?s=46

CM Punk and Roman Reigns had the crowd on their feet from the opening bell, and the action only got hotter as the match continued on, in what ended up being a consensus great match.

From brawling in the crowd, to Roman Reigns bloodying CM Punk up with a shot to the head with steel steps, these two brought it all. CM Punk hit Roman with a Superman punch, and stole the Ula Fala, while Roman Reigns Powerbombed him through the announcers table and had him in hell in the tree of woe.

After a hard-fought battle from both men; it was a spear that sealed the deal. Roman Reigns is the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion to end WrestleMania 42.

  • WrestleMania 42 Night 2 Preview and Predictions: Full Match Picks

WrestleMania 42 Night 2 Preview and Predictions: Full Match Picks

WrestleMania 42 wraps up Sunday, April 19, with a loaded Night 2 card that will shape WWE’s direction moving forward. The show is headlined by Roman Reigns challenging CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship. Several other title matches and key matchups round out the night.

    Brock Lesnar vs. Oba Femi

This is one of the most intriguing matches on the card. Oba Femi has momentum, but WWE often takes a cautious approach with rising stars. Brock Lesnar winning keeps him strong for future programs, and I don’t think he loses until his retirement match. To clarify, these predictions are not what I would do, but how I see WWE working.

    Winner: Brock Lesnar

    Intercontinental Championship Ladder Match

Penta defends against Rusev, Dragon Lee, Rey Mysterio, Je’Von Evans and JD McDonagh. The match lacks a strong story, but the field suggests a showcase. Rey Mysterio stands out as a potential surprise winner in a moment-driven match.

    Winner: Rey Mysterio

    United States Championship Match

Sami Zayn defends against Trick Williams. A character shift appears likely, with Zayn leaning heel and Williams gaining momentum as a fan favorite. Williams feels positioned for a breakout moment.

    Winner: Trick Williams

    Finn Balor vs. Dominik Mysterio

The long running Judgment Day story has cooled, but Balor bringing back his Demon persona signals a decisive outcome. Dominik Mysterio remains effective regardless of results.

    Winner: Finn Balor

    WWE Women’s Championship Match

Jade Cargill defends against Rhea Ripley. With uncertainty around Bianca Belair’s status due to being pregnant, Cargill retaining keeps options open for a future title change tied to Belair’s return. But that seems like a long time from now. I think changes plans.

    Winner: Rhea Ripley

    World Heavyweight Championship Match

CM Punk defends against Roman Reigns in the main event. Reigns regaining the title creates fresh storyline paths and potential rivalries. Punk’s direction may shift following a loss.

    Winner: Roman Reigns

    Final Thoughts

WrestleMania 42 Night 2 looks set to deliver defining moments, with title changes, breakout performances and major storyline shifts all on the table. By the end of the night, WWE should have a clearer picture of its next era (another one?), with new stars rising and familiar names continuing to shape the main event scene.

  • CM Punk: I’m A Gold Medalist At Crossing The Line Because I Will F*ck With You And Get In Your Head

CM Punk: I’m A Gold Medalist At Crossing The Line Because I Will F*ck With You And Get In Your Head

CM Punk understands that the consequences to his actions will unfold on Sunday night at WrestleMania 42.

On March 2, CM Punk delivered one of the most shocking lines to end his promo battle with Roman Reigns when he mentioned that he would bury Reigns next to his father, Sika, who had passed away in June 2024.

When asked if Punk crossed the line by mentioning Reigns late father by Corey Graves for WWE, CM Punk believes he is doing what has to be done for his game plan of getting in Reigns head to work.

“I 100% crossed the line, because that’s what I do. I’m a gold medalist haitual linestepper because I will fuck with you and get in your head. I have all the respect in the world for Sika, Afa, all the Wild Samoans. He needs to be taught a lesson. Yeah, I crossed the line. I legitimately feel a little bit gross about it because it’s low-hanging fruit and I know I’m better than that, but I’m doing what I have to and I’m following my game plan.”

CM Punk is scheduled to be in the main event of WrestleMania 42 on Sunday night where he will put the WWE World Heavyweight Championship on the line against the 2026 Royal Rumble winner, Roman Reigns.

You can watch the entire interview with CM Punk below.

  • Roman Reigns: If I Lose To CM Punk, I Don’t Belong In WWE

Roman Reigns: If I Lose To CM Punk, I Don’t Belong In WWE

Roman Reigns statement has been heard loud and clear on the eve of WrestleMania weekend.

In a new Michael Cole interview for WWE, Roman Reigns was the man of the hour as he stated that if he were to lose his match at WrestleMania 42 on Sunday night against the current WWE Heavyweight Champion, CM Punk. Reigns says he doesn’t belong in WWE and his work will officially be done in the company.

“If I lose to CM Punk at WrestleMania, I don’t belong in the WWE anymore. If I were to lose on Sunday, I’d say my work is done,” he said.

Asked what happens if he wins, Roman replied, “I bring this place back to relevance. I reset the standard. I already set the standard. It got screwed up. Somebody has to come in and re-fix it. That’s what I’ll do.”

Reigns has only been successful once going into WrestleMania as the sole challenger for the WWE Championship when he defeated Triple H in 2016 at WrestleMania 32 to win the gold.

This will be Punk’s second time being in the main event of WrestleMania and his second time with a WWE Championship around his waist, the last time was when he defeated Chris Jericho at WrestleMania 28 in 2012 to retain the gold.
